Virgin Galactic to launch in 2009 January 26, 2008
Posted by Al in : space, travel , trackbackI never thought I’d see space travel become commercialised in my lifetime, and that is despite my growing up reading SF every day. It was always present in those SF novels, with ease of access to space, space stations and other worlds, but as I had paid some attention to the amount of effort it had taken just to compete in the space race of the ’60’s and ’70’s, I knew that the likelihood of getting an ordinary guy into space was very slim. However, Mr Branson has chased his dream, and he’s presented us, the ordinary public, with the chance to actually visit space and see the world from outside. Yes, $200,000 is a lot of money, but it’s just within the reach of most people if they really want to do this, and well within the reach of those who are likely to be the first takers, and subsequently the initial sponsors of this new form of travel.
Whilst it is not something I’d do myself, unless I had a lot of money and had been diagnosed with a terminal illness, it is something that I can now consider doing before I die. I wish Mr Branson, and Virgin Galactic, well, and hope that they have enough early adopters (and a trouble free schedule) to bring the price down and make this unique venture available to more people.
