Walking is less environmentally friendly than driving August 5, 2007

Here’s a turn up for the books! A leading environmental campaigner, and author of “Hot to Live a Low-Carbon Lifestyle” has calculated that walking to the shops is worse for the environment than driving. This is because food production is now so energy-intensive, that more carbon is emitted in producing the food you need to provide the calories for walking, than would be emitted by you driving. In fact, exercising is bad for the environment, even though it is good for you; and food production is worse to the British environment than air traffic or any other form of transport, and Britain is the worst offender in the world. Everything you thought you knew about what’s good for the environment, and what’s bad, is probably wrong!
