Grow your own house June 7, 2007

This could be a nice idea, particularly for the tree-huggers in this world. A pair of architects, and an environmental engineer, are currently working on methods of growing trees to provide the supporting structure of a dwelling. As branches and roots fill in the gaps, then so the future owners fill in the gaps with  mud and plaster, and once it is reasonably complete then the interior can be boarded out. It is suggested that this structure can be grown in 5 years, although they haven’t mentioned which trees they are going to use that grow that fast. It’s an interesting idea, and could lead to some very interesting houses – have a look at this article.
