Britain to re-use graves due to a lack of space June 6, 2007

Britain has a problem – it’s a small country, with strict planning laws and a population who would object to having any kind of change happen anywhere near them; NIMBY’s were invented in Britain and remain very vocal. Add to this lack of space the fact that people are dying to get into their local cemeteries (Boom! Boom!), and there is a grave crisis looming (this post is great for comedy value). The answer, although not very popular, is to re-use old graves. In some cases the current occupant will be exhumed, the grave deepened and the the recumbent re-interred, then the new occupier would be laid on top. I’m not sure what they are going to do with the headstones – maybe a high tech digital display would be a great idea, like the advertising hoardings at football grounds which keep swapping from one advert to another.
