More reasons to support Ron Gravel May 3, 2007

I’m sorry to keep harping on about this man, but the more I read about him, the more I think he might actually be a politician with a bit of sense. Of course, this means that something will crop up to scupper his chances, as he probably wouldn’t stoop to the levels his opponents will. But if, by some strange turn of fate, he actually did get elected as president, he would be happy to legalise marijuana.

The arguments for doing this are vast, and well documented. The arguments against are primarily based on inconclusive psychological research, and religious grounds. My argument has always been that if pot was legal, and alcohol was not, then you’d never get fights in pubs and clubs, Everyone would be too stoned to be bothered to do anything, let alone fight. On a more realistic note: decriminalising cannabis would remove a minor crime from the books, which would free up the police to work on more major crimes, and wouldn’t have any significant impact on other people’s health, or wellbeing.
