I love looking at data centres and render farms, just because it amazes me how far, and fast, high level computing has moved on in the last 25 years. The power in the LucasFilms data centre is almost unimaginable, but the storage there is what really gets me. Those NetApps NAS clusters are super fast, high density storage – and there are quite a few of them hooked up. The graph showing available high performance storage against usage of that storage is staggering as it shows such a climb in demand, and then increased avaiable storage, that it’s hard for an average guy, like you or me, to imagine the money that must have been spent.
