Maybe Bush has done some good, after all January 2, 2007

Hard to believe, but Bush has actually done some good around the world after all. Although everyone will remember him for Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, there is a reason for celebrating Bush’s government, if you are a supporter of Africa as a whole. During his presidency Bush has tripled the amount of monetary aid that is given to African nations, and although this doesn’t really compare to the amount of money that has been spent on military action, it certainly will help those nations who receive this aid.

Although there is another argument against giving any form of aid to Africa at all, and although I’m not a knocker of Africa I can see a form of validity in this argument. It’s the same sort of argument that gets bandied around prisons: some say you should attempt to educate and help the offender, to offer them a better life and a chance to improve themselves; whilst others will press for the death penalty and/or stricter regimes and punishments. I’ll leave you to judge which approach works better in dealing with offenders, and which might be better for Africa.
