The Gimli Glider November 19, 2006

It combines human error and great skill to produce one of those great tales that I’m sure all involved in will tell their kids, and their grandchildren. It is the story of a Boeing 767 which manages to make a perfectly safe landing after running out of fuel whilst in midair. The lack of fuel was caused by the classic confusion of metric and imperial measurements, and what I really like about the story is Boeing reckon it was impossible. Although they built useful safety measures into the plane, no-one has yet managed to repeat the landing in a simulator – and it has been tried. Read more here.
