Voice recognition is the fastest way to text October 26, 2006

…maybe. In this tale the world record holder for speed texting was beaten by a voice recognition program, and comprehensively beaten as well. This is all well and good, and I can imagine such a program could very well work and be very useful. I use a voice recognition program on my phone and it allows me to dial, check appointments, find contacts and will announce incoming calls, but it doesn’t do texting and I think that would be a useful option as texting can be a fiddly process. However I do have this nagging doubt about the fairness of this contest, as the sample text used for the finale was not standard text material, and the manager of the voice recognition software’s company did admit they had had to program it specifically with the words in question.

Now I might have a sneaky mind, but I can’t help thinking that it would have been even easier to program it to complete the entire sentence automatically after recognising the initial few words – this would have prevented any mishap with the complicated, and hard to pronounce Latin words, and would also ensure that the software won. Of course I’m not saying that this is what happened, it’s just what I would do if I was presenting this software on a public stage and didn’t want any of the embarrassment if things went wrong.
