PS3 to save the world August 27, 2006

Having seen a recent video of the new PS3 interface it is obvious that Sony are expecting the majority of PS3’s to be online permanently, and so why shouldn’t they make use of this fact. This online presence, combined with the supposed power of the cell processors (providing Sony and IBM get them working together correctly) will be available for distributed computing projects, along the lines of the well known SETI@Home – although this is now BOINC. The first such project to make use of all the spare PS3 cycles will be the folding@home project, but I should imaging more will become available as time goes by. More detail available at the BBC.
