Formula 1 helps improve patient handovers July 11, 2008

The handover between surgical and post-surgical staff can often be the most dangerous part of a surgical procedure, as one group of people relinquish their control to another. This handover needs precision, coordination and speed if possible – which is why a formula 1 pitstop is perfect inspiration. After learning from both Mclaren and Ferrari, a team in Great Ormond Street Hospital have already improved success rates of such handovers by 30%, and they are looking to learn more from F1 in future. It’s always good to see people able to take from other disciplines and adapt them to help their own.
