Too much oxygen is worse than too little May 3, 2007

Science seems to be full of sudden turnarounds, and this is no exception. For as long as Oxygen has been known to be the primary requirement for a cell’s production of energy, then it has been assumed that a lack of oxygen would mean the end of the cell. Turns out this is wrong (although I should imagine long term it is true), and it’s the sudden re-oxygenation of cells that actually causes their (and hence your) demise. This discovery has lead to a new way of working resuscitations, and should lead to an increase in the number of lives that can be saved in hospital. This might just affect you, in the future, so it’s worth knowing about.
