Toyota Prius fails emissions test in Georgia April 16, 2007

There’s a certain element of irony to this story. The Toyota Prius, the first mainstream hybrid vehicle, is now approaching 3 years old, and so requires an emissions test. The test requires the engine to be run at 2,500rpm, however at this speed the car’s software decides that electric power is more efficient and so turns the engine off. This leads to a failed emissions test, which costs the owner money, and requires a special waiver to allow the vehicle to be licensed. So for having absolutely no emissions at all at the required speed, the Prius is deemed to fail the emissions test! Pure comedy.
