Google Earth is now influencing architecture November 9, 2006

It’s not something you may have expected, and probably something that you have never even considered, but once it is pointed out it seems so obvious. Since Google Earth, and other similar programs such as Microsoft’s Live Virtual Earth, have suddenly become massively popular, architects are now looking on their designs from a new angle – literally. Roofs are now as important as what holds them up. The plan section of a building is now as important as it’s elevation. And how the building sits in it’s environs has to be considered both from the air as well as from the ground. I’m sure it won’t be long before you see buildings whose plans represent company logos, or make witty architectural jokes when seen from space. As long as attention is paid to the rest of the design I can only see this as a Good Things and hope to see the results appearing in the next few years.
