Iraq: new form of casualty goes undetected September 22, 2006

This is an interesting article on a new form of battle casualty in Iraq cause by improvements in body armour. As the protection offered by improved body armour has increased people are now surviving explosions that would normally have caused lethal trauma to their bodies. However nobody realised that there would be significant trauma to their brains when they experience such terrific forces, so there are now undetected casualties still in active service in Iraq who are no longer operating as well as they should. Those who survive an explosion thanks to their body armour may well suffer enough traumatic brain damage to seriously slow their cognitive processes and their reflexes – just the kind of people you want behind you wielding machine guns or RPG’s.
