Incredible Bolivian prison photostory from the BBC August 31, 2006

It’s quite incredible to think that a prison like this can exist in this day and age. San Pedro prison in L Paz is home to around 1,500 inmates, who live there as though it were it’s own little city. There are no real bars or divisions within the prison, inmates can buy or rent their cell depending upon their financial cirumstances (which can be quite good as most are in for drug smuggling). The inmates are left to their own devices in the nights and have to resolve their own issues, but there are food stalls, gambling, sports etc withing the prison – and apparently there is no shortage of top quality cocaine either. Have a look yourself.
