Open source Linux phone from Trolltech August 15, 2006
Posted by Al in : design, gadget , trackbackThis has all I need to get me excited in a very geeky way.
- I like mobile phones and truly believe they will replace laptops, PDAs etc very soon.
- I like Linux (when it works – I think I have a rant building somewhere about that) and it is ideally suited for small-scale embedded applications as it’s kernel is quite slim with all additional features being optional extras – so rather then try to reduce a bloated OS to make it work on a small processor instead you just add the bits you need and no more.
- And I really like Trolltech as they created the QT environment which helped build KDE. Now I used to do a bit of programming and I started learning the Microsoft Foundation Classes in order to write some C++ code. After a week I had a headache and could not understands why I needed to use such huge arguments for virtually every call to any MFC method. Then I discoverd QT and it’s much nicer classes and my stress just disappeared: better classes, better methids, better arguments lead to better code.
So when I found out that Trolltech were releasing an Open Source phone I was sure that this would be a success. This is basically a development mule which will allow code and application writers to test their product in a working environment before release. The phone itself is nothing special to look at but that doesn’t matter, as if some good apps can be created and tested then a phone can be designed around them knowing that it will work successfully. We could be seeing some very multi-functional phones soon.
