Virgin’s stunning news feed viewer

This is a beautiful piece of Flash animation, that polls various Virgin sites and projects the newest and latest feeds from those sites into a bejewelled radar effect. I really like it, it seems usable and responsive. It could do with a zoom option, although saying that, it does tilt slightly towards your pointer as you move around. Very pretty indeed.

Wow! That’s all I can say to this piece of web design. Not only does this work well as a comic, but the whole deign behind it is just amazing as well. I love the way the pages blur as you move from one to the next, I like the individual designs for the loading messages, navigation is simple whether you are in full screen (recommended) or not, and to top all this off the drawings themselves are wonderful. There’s also a good story behind it all. Go and read it and hope that more comics are released using this, or a similar format.

A robot exoskeleton that actually works

The idea of having a robotic exoskeleton has been around for a long time (witness Aliens and many SF stories from before), but it has not yet managed to actually make it to production. One of the main flaws has been that any exoskeleton developed so far has been big, clunky and awkward to use. However, there is a new exoskeleton on the block, and it really seems to work – the video shows it’s user catching balls, punching a speedball and dancing. It looks as though the difference here is in the software, as previous exoskeletons have always had the power, but no finesse, and now the software actually allows the user to control the exoskeleton intuitively.

What’s slightly more worrying/disturbing is that there are plans for the exoskeleton to continue functioning after the user has left it. I seem to remember a number of SF stories from the Golden Age where battlesuits continued to wage war, or pursue other activities, long after their operator had left or passed away, and I wonder what kind of controls would be put in place to prevent this. Who knows, with Skynet about to be launched, maybe Terminator was not so far fetched after all.

Wingsuit mountain swoop

Wingsuits have added a whole new dimension to parachuting – whether skydiving or base jumping. Now that they are becoming more commonplace, people are starting to take their use to new, and extreme levels. I can only begin to imagine what a rush this must be – swooping across the ground at around 100mph, but I’d probably be too busy being scared to really enjoy it. For those who’ve had their fear glands removed, I’d recommend giving it a go.
