The difference between playing chess and being a chess master June 27, 2007

I’ve seen a few documentaries about chess masters, and read a lot of stories as well, that have made it clear that you really need a great memory as well as talent to go far in the game. However this anecdote neatly sums up the difference between someone who can play chess, and someone for whom chess is everything. I’ve never met anyone that good at chess, but I do know that my memory, and talent, would not be good enough to come anywhere close to this level of mastery.
