FIRST – an ethical robotic competition April 8, 2007
Posted by Al in : robots , trackbackRobots are still fascinating creations. I would love to have been involved in robotics when I was a lad, and if I had been born a decade later then things like Robot Wars would have been on the TV and robotics would likely have been available in school technology lessons, rather than designing and building a pen holder or letter rack. Still, there are plenty of opportunities for people these days to get involved in designing and building robots, and in the US they have a massive competition each year, and next weekend will feature this year’s.
What I like about this FIRST competition is that not only are they a challenge for the competitors, but they also teach an ethical approach to the work and competition, advising the competing parties to have respect for each other and a sense of responsibility. They also have a good tag line – “The hardest fun ever”. You can read more about FIRST and robotics here, and the FIRST site is here. It would be nice to see something more advance that Robot Wars take place in the UK and Europe, not just America and Japan.
