Anti-Semitism or just the truth? April 5, 2007

I appreciate the author’s honesty in this piece of journalism. A basketball player has spoken out about the Jewish people he has had dealings with, and because he has mentioned Jews and has made broad assertions about their face, he has been castigated as an Anti-Semite – this is despite the fact that his comments were almost entirely complimentary. What’s worse is that the Anti-Defamation League has jumped on these statements and has congratulated the sport’s governing body for suspending the player. Now considering the fact that the comments were not defamatory, but rather complimentary instead, this is a strange action. It is nice, therefore, to see a Jew coming to the defence of the player and pointing out that such over-reaction is ridiculous. I only hope that more people realise that comments may not always be meant in a derogatory manner.
