A bridge that becomes a tunnel March 20, 2007

Now this is a freaky and unexpected piece of engineering. Build a bridge half way across an strait, but then build an artificial island and send the road down into a tunnel for the rest of the journey. Apparently this has been done to allow the harbour mouth to remain open even if the bridge is blown up, but I’m not sure why they didn’t just build a tunnel across the entire harbour in the first place. After all bridges are expensive to build, and then they had to build an artificial island and then then tunnel. I’m sure a tunnel would have been close to the same cost, if not cheaper. And what’s more remarkable is that the comments to this article reveal there are other bridge/tunnel combinations around the world. Have a look and a read here.
