New DOCSIS – new speeds September 5, 2006
Posted by Al in : Internet , trackbackThis is probably of very little interest to most people at the moment, but since I work for a cable company that uses both DOCSIS and EuroDOCSIS then this is interesting to me. The new DOCSIS 3.0 standard is to roll out next year, and this will offer speeds of up to 160Mb/s – which is very fast indeed. Currently we’re capping speeds at 10Mb/s (although no caps on downloads now), but there is a maximum of 38Mb/s using the current equipment. Now I know that we (ntl:Telewest) are currently upgrading any old cable that is still in situ, and so hopefully our head-ends will soon be upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0 and then we will have definitely won any possible speed wars. Also good is that DOCSIS 3.0 fully supports IPv6 – although this is not so good from my perspective as I’m dreading the time when I have to get a customer to read out their IPv6 address.
